2023 Summer Kids' Arts Camp!
Thursdays
at the Arts Center from 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Workshops are $10 per child per class.
Materials will be provided unless otherwise noted.


July 6: Georgia O'Keeffe Flowers (Watercolor)
With Lauren Walker

OʼKeeffe-style watercolor flowers for kids - Using wet on wet and dry watercolor techniques to create a simple floral painting in the style of American artist Georgia OʼKeeffe. After learning about the artist and looking at the style of her artworks, kids will draw large abstract or realistic flowers that fill a page and use different watercolor paint and pencil techniques to paint their floral delight! Suitable for kids age 8 and up.


July 13:
Sacred Hearts

With Lauren Walker

Using repoussé metal techniques along with Model magic clay to create a Mexican Folk Art style Sacred Heart hanging decoration. Participants will learn about “sacred hearts” -  beautiful adornments traditionally made in Mexico that show love and hope. Each child will create a hanging piece of art created from model magic and metal. Suitable for kids age 10 and up.

 

July 20: Flower Pounding
With Hallie Bond

We’ll use that young energy to make prints directly from leaves and flowers by pounding with a hammer. Both fabric and paper will be provided for the prints.

 

July 27: Clay Frames
With Lauren Walker

Creating simple hanging flower frames and birds from air-dry clay and adding texture/color with paint and other decorative media. Participants will learn how using a flat ceramic piece or ʻslabʼ. Each child will go home with two pieces of hanging art which will dry overnight. Suitable for kids age 7 and up.

 

August 3: Theatre Fun!

Actors from our Adirondack Lakes Theatre Festival will work with participants to hone their theatrical skills – including characterization, stage movement, and vocal projection – playing fun theatre games and putting on a show! Suitable for age 7 and up.

 

August 10: Mini Story Boxes
With Lauren Walker

Using Collage and Assemblage techniques to create pocket-sized works of art. Whatʼs your story? Using found objects, participants will create a pocket-sized box that tells their story with images, colors, and textures. Kids are asked to bring an empty pocket-sized box if they have one (think Altoids tin size!) and any ʻtreasuresʼ they may want to include, such as found items like shells and feathers, mini photographs, souvenirs like ticket stubs or keychains and trinkets like pins or fun toys. Lots of found items and boxes will be available to use, as well! Suitable for kids age 12 and up.

 

August 17: Acrylic Bird Paintings
With Lauren Walker

Creating an acrylic bird painting inspired by the work of John James Audubon and the birds of the Adirondacks. Participants will learn about the life of Audubon and his artwork. After gathering inspiration from his story, kids will draw realistic birds from the Adirondacks and use acrylic paint techniques to create unique bird paintings on canvas. Suitable for kids age 7 and up.

 

August 24: Scratch Art Animals
With Lauren Walker

Using simple line drawing and texture techniques to create a picture of a chosen animal on black and white Scratch Art paper. Perhaps the participant will pick an Adirondack animal, or maybe even a favorite animal! Suitable for kids age 9 and up.
