Recognizing and appreciating the ancient trees and forests that survived the widespread logging of the Adirondacks
We all enjoy the natural beauty of the Adirondack forests that we see every day when we explore the park. These forests are mostly second-growth forests – forests that have regrown since the vast majority (92 – 97%) of the park was logged, mostly in the 1800’s. Second growth forests are now sufficiently old that they contain large, tall, and quite impressive trees; they are beautiful forests. But the trees growing in the second growth forests are mostly young to middle-aged.
Is the Adirondacks Park then truly devoid of the oldest trees? No. The goal of this presentation will be to arm the audience with tools for recognizing and appreciating the oldest trees in our Adirondack forests. This will include how to recognize the few ancient trees that still stand in…
