Conference of the Birds
The Adirondack Lakes Summer Theatre Festival kicks off its second season with legendary stage director Peter Brook’s provoking and exciting work performed in the church at St. Williams on Long Point. With only two performances, July 8th and July 9th, this is a once in a life-time opportunity to see cutting-edge theater in one of the Adirondack’s most beautiful settings. As an added bonus to the production, guests will also enjoy a champagne cruise on the WW. Durant after the performance. Ferry boats to the island leave the Antler’s dock at 7:00 pm with the performance at 8:00 pm.
The story line of the play focuses on a nation of birds in crisis and, urged on by one of their flock, the Hoopee, they chart a path to find their king. Above all, the Hoopee is trying to help them conquer their fear of life as the stage becomes an astonishing aviary. Through masks, dance, and song this beautiful adaptation of the 12th Century poem comes to life in a magical evening of theater. Appropriate for all ages.
In an inspiring act of innovation, Brook first toured Conference of the Birds throughout rural Africa before presenting two extremely successful productions to western audiences, one in New York City at La MaMa, E.T.C. and one in Paris. The Arts Center production will be directed by award-winning playwright and AC Executive Artistic Director, Stephen Svoboda. The production features a cast of 7 professional actors as well as an all star design team, including set designer Tim Brown, whose most recent work was as an assistant designer on the Broadway revival of Driving Miss Daisy with James Earl Jones and Vanessa Redgrave.
