the arts center

MISSION:
The Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts is a multi-disciplinary arts center, serving over 2,000 square miles of the Adirondack Park. The Arts Center provides service to the non-profit field as a presenter, producer and educator in the artistic disciplines of visual arts, theater, music, dance, and film throughout the Adirondack region as well as providing technical assistance to non-profits, local government, and area businesses.

THE SPACE:
The arts center was founded in 1967 in a converted commercial garage in Blue Mountain Lake, NY. Over the years the space has grown and changed, and the center now holds two studio workshops, five gallery spaces, a consignment shop, and a large multipurpose performance space with a stage, curtains, and a theatrical lighting rig.

ACTIVITIES:
The Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts produces professional theater in the summer (2 musicals, Shakespeare in the Park, plus 1 site-specific production) and in the fall, spring, and winter produces community performances featuring local talent. In collaboration with other organizations, the Arts Center presents concerts (classical, instrumental, world music, folk, bluegrass, punk, rock) and dance performances (modern, ballet, hip hop, ballroom, African, tap). Our Arts Education Initiative offers 4 comprehensive learning programs (Theater Experience, Film-making 101, Arts from the Start: Early Childhood Learning, and our Studio Arts Series) for students ranging from preschool to retired professionals, plus a multi-arts program for the developmentally disabled (The Living Able Series). Our five on-site galleries and satellite galleries feature exhibits from artists working in a variety of media including sculpture, ceramics, painting, drawing, fiber arts, jewelry, glass, and photography.

In addition to its public programs, the Arts Center also administers the New York State Decentralization Regrant Program for Hamilton County. This program provides grants to local nonprofit organizations to sponsor art and cultural events, including concerts, workshops, and lectures in their own communities.

The area served by the Arts Center includes Hamilton County, and parts of Essex, Franklin, Warren, and Herkimer counties. Our intent, with this diversity, is to enrich and unite the entire Adirondacks via the arts.
